The home of great stories written from the heart.

Prison Grits by Jean Bell
Picture
A big prison in a small southern town provides a number of opportunities for ladies looking for work. But not   all of those opportunities turn out well. Riots, escapes, assaults, and corruption make these jobs way too interesting for some of the ladies in town.
Mrs. Kelly, the lovable maven of all things practical and kind, heads the cast of characters and serves as a   link between the three ladies who accept jobs at the prison. Mrs. Kelly's widowhood doesn't keep her from   diving full-heartedly back into life and relationships, and her firm and gentle ways create bonds between   herself, her fellow employees, and the men she must oversee in her job at the prison cafeteria.           Wilma's   own  approach to life is colored not only by her job at the prison, but also by her children, her deplorable   husband, and her desire to better her life.  And the shy, prison librarian Faith Miller hides a secret plan of   revenge along side her lust for red thong underwear.

While on the job, each lady responds differently to the drama of the prison. And along the way, they learn a  little more about themselves and each other.

Tantalizing Tidbits from Prison Grits:

We locked the meat freezer from inside. We didn't want the inmates to push in after us. When the other cooks and I rushed through the door, tall shelves of Sunbeam bread fell to the floor. Slices broke loose from their bags and were trampled under our feet. They looked like cotton scraps after the harvest. It was so quiet in the freezer we could have heard an ant pissing on the cotton.

What was I thinking when I took this job?

                                                                     ******
"What do you think the inmates will think about me falling?" She didn't sound particularly flustered, just curious.

"Oh, don't worry. It happened so fast, most of them didn't even notice." I lied, knowing for certain that most of the inmates surely did notice her fall, also knowing that they had definitely admired the red thong she wore under her boring beige skirt.

What Amazon Readers Say about Prison Grits:

What a great read! Strong women characters; a good mystery; powerful inside look at the prison system...its effects on those who work there as well as prisoners.

a determined middle aged woman with a slightly nosy personality gets tangled in prison crime; sounds unlikely, but wait til you get caught up in unraveling the clues!

Intriguing, funny, and touching. HIghly recommend.

This is a wonderful book with great characters in a realistic prison setting. Highly recommended!

“Lock yourself in with this book. Seriously, Prison Grits is that good. It’s a terrific story that explores the realities of prison life for both inmates and those who work with them. Humor and sadness are woven throughout and the characters are pitch perfect. The author knows prisons and, even better, knows people.” Pat Willer

“Great read! Vivid descriptions of prison life make you glad you’re not there! But beware, Mrs. Kelly’s voice will linger long after you close on the last chapter. Looking forward to finding out what happens to her in the next book.” Ann Kelly
